Pink Noise, Brown Noise, and White Noise for Tinnitus: What the Research Actually Says
The “coloured noise” conversation has moved well beyond internet wellness culture. Pink, brown, and white noise have distinct spectral properties that make them differently suited for different tinnitus applications. Here is what the physics and the clinical literature say about when each one helps — and when it doesn’t.

The Physics: What Makes Each Noise “Coloured”
All coloured noises are defined by the relationship between their power and frequency. Specifically, they differ in how power changes as frequency rises — described by the power spectral density.

The human auditory system does not perceive equal power as equal loudness. It is more sensitive to middle frequencies (1,000–4,000 Hz). White noise, with equal power at all frequencies, therefore sounds disproportionately bright and harsh because its high-frequency content hits the most sensitive auditory region directly.
Pink noise — with 3 dB less power per octave — is perceptually flatter because it compensates for the auditory system’s frequency sensitivity curve. This is why pink noise is described as “equal loudness per octave” and why it sounds more natural and less fatiguing than white noise.
White Noise for Tinnitus
White noise was the first sound used in tinnitus masking devices, beginning in the 1970s. It provides broadband masking — covering the full auditory range including most tinnitus frequencies — but its high-frequency brightness can itself cause auditory fatigue with extended use.
For therapeutic purposes (not masking), white noise has largely been supplanted by pink noise in research settings. The equal-power-per-Hertz distribution is theoretically attractive for certain masking calculations but does not appear to offer therapeutic advantages over pink noise for tinnitus treatment.
Best use for white noise: Short-term background masking in environments with specific mid- and high-frequency intrusions (air conditioning hum, office noise). Not recommended for extended tinnitus therapy or sleep use.
Pink Noise: The Therapy Standard
Pink noise (1/f noise) is the standard carrier for notched sound therapy research, and for good reason. Its 3 dB/octave rolloff produces equal energy per octave — the same distribution that the auditory system evolved to process. This makes it:
- Perceptually flat and non-fatiguing for extended listening
- Spectrally rich across the full therapeutic frequency range (250 Hz–16 kHz)
- Responsive to precise notch filtering: the notch is clearly defined against the pink background
- Well-tolerated at therapeutic volumes without causing perceived harshness
Pink noise in clinical tinnitus research
The majority of notched sound therapy trials (including Okamoto 2010, Teismann 2011, and subsequent replication studies) used pink noise as the carrier. This consistency means that the clinical evidence base for notched therapy is specifically evidence for notched pink noise — translating results from notched white noise or other carriers involves assumptions that haven’t been directly tested.
Pink noise also has emerging evidence for sleep: a 2017 study in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience found that pink noise phase-locked to slow-wave sleep enhanced slow oscillations and improved next-day memory consolidation in older adults.
Brown Noise: For Sleep and Parasympathetic Activation
Brown noise (also called red noise, Brownian noise) has the most low-frequency energy of the three. Its deep, rumbling character makes it subjectively calming for many people — the “brown noise effect” that became a popular social media topic in 2022 has a plausible neurobiological basis: low-frequency sounds activate the parasympathetic nervous system more than high-frequency sounds, reducing physiological arousal.
For tinnitus specifically:
- Brown noise is effective background masking for high-frequency tinnitus (the bass-heavy spectrum still masks the tinnitus while minimising high-frequency stimulation of the damaged cochlear region)
- For sleep, brown noise may be better tolerated than pink noise at the lower volumes appropriate for bedtime
- Brown noise is not suitable as a carrier for notched therapy: its 6 dB/octave rolloff means it has relatively little high-frequency energy, and notching it in the 4,000–10,000 Hz range (where most tinnitus occurs) leaves an extremely quiet signal that provides little lateral inhibitory drive

Which Noise Is Best for Notched Therapy?
For notched sound therapy, pink noise is the correct choice based on both the research evidence and the spectral requirements of the mechanism:
- The lateral inhibition mechanism requires driving neurons adjacent to the tinnitus frequency with sufficient energy. Pink noise provides this across the full high-frequency therapeutic range.
- The notch needs to be spectrally prominent enough to produce the relative absence of input at the tinnitus frequency. Against a pink background, a correctly applied notch (0.5–1 octave wide, 30+ dB deep) is clearly defined.
- All existing clinical evidence for notched sound therapy uses pink noise. Using a different carrier introduces unvalidated assumptions.

- Work/focus: Pink or brown noise depending on personal preference. Both are better than white noise for extended listening.
- Acute spike/SOS situations: Any comfortable broadband masker — the goal is immediate relief, not therapy.
- White, pink, and brown noise differ in how their power is distributed across frequencies. Pink noise has equal energy per octave, making it perceptually flat and non-fatiguing.
- Pink noise is the clinical standard for notched sound therapy and provides the optimal spectral shape for lateral inhibition across high-frequency tinnitus ranges.
- Brown noise is better suited for sleep and background calm: its low-frequency energy is parasympathetically calming, and it is more pleasant at low bedtime volumes.
- White noise is rarely the best choice for extended tinnitus use due to high-frequency harshness and auditory fatigue with long sessions.
- Masking (temporary acoustic competition) and therapy (lasting neural change) are different goals that require different approaches and different sound types.
